On Being Different

Our daughter Melanie, the painter of this picture is diabetic. She has been diabetic since she was 7. We nearly lost her. Its a struggle for a kid to be different. To not be able to go to Dairy Queen and get a big sundae or take a candy cane off the tree at christmas and enjoy it. Its hard to take out a syringe 4 times a day and give yourself a shot in front of people, who wonder and watch.
She painted this picture about what it feels like to be different. On the outside. Standing at the end. looking another direction from everyone else. Having dreams die because you have to think about health insurance and buying medication. She can't be some wandering artist, painting all over the globe.
Although this painting is another one that is a difficult subject and not easy on the eyes. It tells a story. One many people live for a multitude of reasons. There is hope in this picture too. Bright red is the color of the different one, eye catching, exciting color. Bold and the face is looking at you, not away.
There is a future.

Lovely painting Patty. I'm so glad she had the talent and uses it to express what she has learned to deal with.
So many young people beat their heads and hands and heats again the wall of "what is", always thinking it will somehow become what they desire. The painting is such a wonderful statement of her reality. And that of many people..."it isn't easy being green", to quote Kermit. My 5 children found it isn't easy to be an adopted child. It's something they had to come to terms with. I'm sure your mother's heart knows what I mean...Hugs, for the simple life, the garden goodness, the road less taken, and the wisdom that follows, Finn

I like this painting. I'm sure we all feel like this sometimes - there doesn't necessarily need to be a handicap of some sort to feel alone or different and unaccepted. A very inciteful picture :-)
