Indian Paint Brush

Indian Paint Brush or Castilleja indivisa is a genus of parasitic plants that must tap into the roots of other plants for their nutrients. These are the first I have seen this year. They look a bit pale to me.
I found them on the side of a road near my house. The late afternoon sun shining on them. In the weeks to come there will be more and they will bloom next to the Texas Bluebonnets. Just not sure how good the wildflowers will be this year with our drought.

I don't know where in Texas you are but I know in the Texas Hill Country the paint brushes and bluebonnets are always gorgeous. Not much rain falls there, probably more than this year, but maybe they will come on out in all their glory!

I love Indian Paint Brush. It is my favorite wild plant. I can't wait to move back to MOntana so I can see it more often. Thanks for the picture. It is a bright spot in a gloomy Oregon day.

Indian paintbrush is one of my favorites too, parasite and all. According to the desert wildflower watch http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html
It should NOT be a "good" year for flowers though.
