Date Night

One of our favorite dates is heading off to Whole Foods Market and doing some shopping and then having a bit of a meal, that we have purchased in the store, and eating it in their little dining area.
There is something so very simple, so very "poor student" like date that makes it lots of fun.
I chose some hot soup that they have for sale and some Indian Naan bread. Emery had some herbed flat bread with his. We shared a quart of Soy Chai and ended the meal with a whole grain peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. We talked and laughed, watched people and the beautiful fish in a nearby very large aquarium.
We have this date on a regular basis and for some reason its one of my favorites. Maybe because its about us and our likes and not about what to wear, or what to order and certainly not much to do with the cost ! No one interrupts us, no one even notices us or at least we don't see them wondering about that strange couple in the corner holding hands and laughing while they eat off of napkins and drink out of small paper cups.

At the store last night there was a man, dressed nicely, looked normal enough. We were shopping in the bulk food isle and noticed him taking handful after handful of stuff from the containers. Munching away, sort of in a sly way. Of course there are signs all over saying NO SAMPLING. He was sampling big time. Macadamia nuts, expensive foods.
He was going to town. I watched and wondered what the ethical thing to do was. Finally after his 10th or so hand to mouth sampling I went to find someone and let them know. Yes, I snitched on him. An employee watched in horror for a bit from the end of the isle as this man stole more and more food by the handful. Finally they got the security guard and escorted the man out of the store and to his very nice car !
Guess he had some issues or something but he was really feasting where he wasn't supposed to.
I kept thinking about all the shows they have recently on TV where they film people watching something being done that is wrong. The appearance of someone being abusive, the appearance of someone stealing etc and how few people stopped or reported the behaviors . I remember seeing a couple of those shows and wondering what I would do in some sort of situation like that. Last night was my night to find out.
This man was not just taking two jelly beans or sampling to see if the nuts where fresh, he was boldly stealing handful after handful of food.
Very odd.

Good for you Patty! I am a small business owner and people who come in and shoplift can really hurt us. It can make the difference as to whether we make or rent that month sometimes. Most of the time people don't realize that shoplifters are stealing from other people. This guy probably wouldn't have walked into his neighbors house and steal from them, but thought it was OK to steal from the store. I bet he won't do it again now!

You asked me about disability. I did get mine through my job. It was a benefit I didn't even really know that I had, but was very grateful it was there when the time came. Check with her employer and see if it is part of her benefit package. Most of the time, it is. If she is on doctor ordered bed rest then she qualifies to collect.

Good for you! I know the "mind your own business" culture is big in the US, but I think if more people said something about these transgressions (talking on cells phones during a movie, verbally absusing sales help, etc.) then we might be in better shape.

Glad you snitched!

I'm more offended by his lack of sanitary considerations. Passing germs only needs a hand a mouth..ew!
