A Day for Doing Nothing

Some days just beg to be lazy and today was one of those. Got dressed late in the morning, had a brunch of left over pizza from our date last night and tinkered around the house for hours. Emery mowed the yard and worked over at Melanie and Casi's house for a bit, he has a hard time sitting still. I volunteered to watch Mei-Ling while Melanie prepared for company.
The wee one slept soundly for 3 hours, with her grammie gazing lovingly at her ever few minutes.
Emery and I had fresh strawberries with fresh whipped cream for our lunch. Cool and sweet.
It has been just a simple day, no stresses, long chats with friends and family on the phone, feet up on the coffee table, baby in my arms, reading a delightful book. Turning away from the page long enough to gaze into a tiny face, so filled with peace and serenity.
Flowers are blooming everywhere right now, the driveway lined with color, it catches my eye and I just sit there admiring them. Looking at the details around me, with childlike wonder. Amazed at so much beauty.
Tonight, our meal was simple, potatoes from the garden, dug and scrubbed just yesterday. A bit of olive oil, the juice of a lemon, some fresh oregano, a crushed garlic clove poured over the boiled pomme de terre's. Red cabbage salad, the cabbage from the garden, and sausage, store bought ! All served on ordinary dishes, on the kitchen table, well worn wood, no cloth. Wine glasses sparkling in the candle light. Music playing in the other room, soft background music. A shared piece of chocolate, a long impromptu dance at meals end. Emery's big work boots seeming huge next to my bare feet. We laugh that familiar comfortable laugh we know so well about the possibility of having my toes stepped on.
The moment ends, Emery heads out the back door to do the evening chores, and I stand at the sink doing the nights dishes, feeling so content. The kitchen turns into a barber shop as I cut Emery's hair, the conversation easy. Hair swept up, we both head off to the computer room, me to blog, Emery to work on a project, we are less than three feet from each other. Each on our own computer. Modern times. Josh Groban sings to us over the computer speakers, we muse how the computers speakers sound as good as the stereo in the living room.
If you think about it, the simple ordinary things in our life are the very things that can give us the most.
Take time to notice the little things, the good things and savour them.
