A New President has been elected

Where I vote, its a bit old fashioned. Nothing electronic, not even a cubical to vote in. Just round tables, the kind used for eating at. The kind that seats 6 or 8 people. Melanie and I sat next to each other as we voted and chatted about who we were voting for. There were a few stand up, science fair variety, tri-fold things for people that wanted privacy. I am a pretty open person, nothing to hide view of life. The mostly taboo subjects of religion and politics are not something I hide. I believe what I believe, I don't mind sharing my questionings about God. I don't hide my political views either, despite the fact that they are not very conservative and I know that most of my blog readers are. What I believe is part of the definition of who I am. Why on earth would I want to hide that unless I was afraid, afraid of having someone disagree with me and then what ? I like to think that as adults in this modern age, we can disagree and yet get beyond that to see there is great merit in not all being the same.
I don't expect everyone to share my thoughts. And that's fine.
I was stirred to tears last night watching the people in the crowds shown on T.V. as they heard the news that Obama was to be our new president. I saw something I had not seen in years, HOPE. Hope for something better than war and apathy.
We have changed from who we are as a people in the last 30 years which means that many of us want a leader that reflects who we have become in that time. There is crime I know and there is violence in so many areas of life, but we often don't take the time to see the other side of the scale, how good we have become as a people. We give so much. We care deeply for the plight of the suffering and we are even learning to move past blame and condemnation for how people ended up in less than desirable circumstances. I think many of us now see, we are often just one single choice away from difficult circumstances. A bad choice can change your life. Marrying the wrong person, taking one too many drinks and getting behind the wheel. Saying cruel, hard words. Choosing self when you should have chosen others. Not chilling out when you should have. Taking a hit of an addictive drug just one time and that one time changed your direction. We understand now that so many times, we could be just where that down and out person was if we had their parents, their life. Knowing that, takes away the condemnation and allows us to see the need without judgement.
I am glad we elected Obama. I feel hopeful. The house next to us is for sale, the reason, the husband was in an accident, no health insurance, (they simply could not afford it) they have to sell their house to pay for medical bills. 3 children uprooted. Three doors down, another house for sale, this one with a shop in the back where the man repaired cars for a living. He was in an accident and since he is self employed, there was no way for him to be able to pay his own health insurance. To pay the medical bills of his accident, he is selling his house too which is also his business.
We need change in so many areas of this country, but tender to my heart is the medical insurance mess we are in.
Even within the plain people life is changing in this area too. Medical bills used to be paid easily by the community. You got sick, sent to the hospital and the church and community paid the bill. Not so easy now when hospital bills reach the million dollar mark. The churches are struggling to know what to do. What if two people get sick in the church at the same time ? Who can afford to pay that kind of money ? Hard to ask another church to help out when they are experiencing the same struggles within their own community.
We all need change and personally I will gladly be taxed higher to get something in return. I would rather pay $400 a month in taxes for a system that can't drop me, refuse me because of a pre-existing condition, or charge huge deductibles than to pay $600 a month to an insurance company that can do all that and more.

Last night sort of felt like all the things I fought for in my teens and early 20's are now reality.
Makes me want to stand up and sing that Crosby Stills Nash and Young song.... "Long Time Gone"
This old hippy woman loves the idea of change and these words from Obama's speech last night give me such a good feeling. The cobwebs of apathy that stole the hope for a better world have been blown away !

"This is our time to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope," he said. "And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can."
~Barack Obama~
to that I add "Amen"

I would have to say I disagree with you.

However isn't that the great thing about our country, we can have differing views and we are both allowed to voice them! What a wonderful place to live! And that we are able to vote the way we feel best, and when it is all over the voice of the people is heard. It is a great system.

God bless the USA.

I liked reading your post, you have such a way of stating things that is so respectful. I don't like political discussions that turn into name calling and such. Well done!
Well said - as another old hippy - I so agree - this is a time of hope. Yes we did!!!!

Patty, You're such a rebel! ha ha! At my polling place they had a big red lettered sign that said "No electioneering within 300 feet of Polling."

I am setting aside time to specifically pray for Mei-Ling today. I've thought of asking my readers (all 10 of them ha ha) to do the same... if you'd be okay with that.

Hi Dana, That would be great...the more prayers the better

Time will tell, but I remember that over 16 years ago Clinton promised that we would have a national health program.
Many promises are made in campaigns that are not be kept.

I am also concerned that we will continue to be reliant on foreign oil for decades, thus funding the economies of people who hate us and wish to see us, "the infidels" dead.

I do think that it is wonderful that our society has evolved to the point that hate and prejudice has died out to the extent that we can have a black man for president.

I live in Canada where health care is covered, and it is a blessed relief. It's not perfect, but the long waits for specialists and surgeries you hear about are being addressed with new systems and practices. No one has to go bankrupt for health costs and the care is excellent. And Canada is a capitalist democracy, not something to be fearful of - some things just work better this way, and universal health care is one of them. My family doctor was so happy he didn't have to worry whether someone could pay or not - he just did what they needed.

Imagine not having to worry about what plan you have and what it covers and if you lose your job? I am moving back to the US next year, and I am unhappy about the health care part of the move. I too would love to see change there.

And a thoughtful, well read, statesman like thinker in the White House is wonderful. I'm very happy too. The hope felt round the world is wonderful to see - people overseas are excited that America had the courage to take a new, more optimistic direction. Peacefully, too. It is a great example to the world. Thank you America.

Mei-Ling will be in my prayers today.
You know I agree! I am so happy Obama is in office. Though, I have to praise McCain for his victorious speech on Obama. I give much respect to a losing party who still carries optimism and celebrates a change in history.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I struggled with whether or not to share my views and decided to write about it; you did so far more eloquently!

Mei-Ling and all your family are in my thoughts today and prayers always.

Thank you for your post, I had a really hard day at work (I'm a doctor) and it made me realise again how lucky I am to live in a country where we can and do treat everyone, and it doesn't bankrupt them. I'm really excited about the election results too! Bit of an anticlimax now though, we turf our PMs out of No. 10 the minute the results come through! As you say, our differences make the world the great place it is.
Mei Ling is in my prayers too, I hope all goes smoothly.

I, like momzoo, disagree with you, but that's what America is made of...freedom of choice.

May God have mercy on us all.

I feel very moved by what has happened in your country, and what this change can mean for the whole world. I loved this post, and was glad to get the chance to return to reading blogs tonight when so many are celebrating this new day in your country, and in the world.

I am one of your conservative readers, and I am grieving today.
Yesterday we lost so much. Our government will now be controlled by Democrats in the White House and the Congress. I do not think that will be a good thing for our country as any loyal opposition will have no power. But I do respect your opinion that Obama will be a good thing for this country, though I do not agree. We will just have to wait and see.

I am in prayer for Mei-Ling's healing and a decrease in her pain.

Only time will tell, but I whole heartedly disagree with you. As for my family...we voted based on the never changing Word of GOD. HIS Word is just as alive now as it was then.

So based on moral issues and convictions I could not honestly stand by and vote for someone that clearly does not stand for what is right. This man as well as his party affiliation are not ones that I can honestly respect.

I have to say, thank you to the men & women who serve & have served (my Husband, my Father, my previous neighbor & wife, my Nephew...to name a few) to keep the freedoms we have and those who have died (my cousin for one) honorably in the protection of our country. My prayer is that they have not defended our country & our freedoms in vain.

I pray that the LORD lead this new president elect in all ways. I also strongly urge us all to pray for the judges as they are the ones we really need to watch out for.

The saying is now- Yes, we will.
I find it wonderful that we will have a man at the helm who has expereinced what it means to be an American.
I, too, will pay more. I have three siblings with no health insurance- all have some sort of long term problem that they pay for as they go. What happens if even one of them has their condition get out of hand?
Yes- we will care for all.

Hi I am new to the site and I too like to live simply. But I too have to disagree. But thats the beauty of diversty. Yes there our things that need to be fixed, like health care. But, I dont think Socialism the answer. There is only 1 United States of America and there is no other country like ours. I dont want to be just like Canada or France or Great Britain I will give this President a chance, but I have a wait and see attitude. As a military family, I hope this administration keeps in mind the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made and give the respect and diginty they deserve. I hope that our constitutional rights remain intact.
I am very glad that the racial discrimination barriers that have held our nation in bondage for so very long are finally falling away. The election of President-elect Obama is proof of this.

I can also understand how you and others could desire a national healthcare system, especially since your precious little granddaughter MeiLing has needed MUCH medical care. I am sure the expense has been crippling for your family. We experienced a life-threatening illness with one of our children and if we hadn't been debt-free when it struck us, we would have been financially crushed. (That's why I am so assertive in telling people to ALWAYS live within thier means, pay off debt and stay out of debt - unfortunately they usually just roll their eyes at me).

However, I respectfully say I do not see good things coming from a Democratic Presidency, a Democratically controlled House, and, if three other seats are won, a fillibuster-proof Democratically controlled Senate. When government is supposed to be a democracy all sides of a society need to be represented for the good of the people. The kind of power the Democratic party could possibly hold within the next few weeks will make a diversified government obsolete, for the time being at least. During this time the conservatives of this nation will not be heard. The Bible believing Christians of this nation will not be heard. The social issues the Democratic party supports (abortion, same sex marriage, institutionalized education, elimation of 2nd ammendment rights, freedom of speech against sin, elimination of inferred parental rights, etc.) will become more tightly woven into the fabric of our society. A tidal wave of anti-Christian, prejudice is on our horizon.

My father and husband has had the opportunity to work in foriegn lands and has worked with people of all races, religions and nationalities. EVERY person they've met from other countries have expressed a deep desire to have and experience the freedom of CHOICE that American's take for granted. (Even when they know of the many problems our nation has/faces.) Tuesday's election results, in my opinion, put us on the fast track to the elimination of our most prized freedom - CHOICE.

Today I heard a news commentator refer to President-elect Obama as saviour and messiah - Shouldn't we, as Christians, find something wrong with this?

I enjoy your posts and your insite. I am praying for MeiLing's quick recovery.

Yes, Mrs B. the president elect is just a man, not anyone messiah or savior. Calling him that is wrong on so many levels. One thing so many in this country are looking for is something better than what we have right now. So many are hopeful that better things are around the corner.
When medical bills are in the hundreds of thousands, being out of debt means nothing. A little guy in the mennonite church here has cancer, his bill nearing $1,000,000. The community cannot even pay that. We are debt free and have been for decades but there is no way we could afford hundreds of thousands of dollars.
