Going Back in Time

This afternoon when I was listening to the news, I heard a financial expert say words that surprised me. Surprising in that they are words lots of folks need to hear. Paraphrasing, she said, its time to go back to the way things used to be when people planned for their future, saved money and didn't buy everything they wanted.
Granted, some folks make very little money and expenses are high, to those folks she said, it was time to forgo the video games, the eating out etc. I can add to that, eat hot cereal, dump the cable TV and maybe even live without a cell phone if you have a land line.
Common sense stuff, much like the study released not long ago that said if you wanted to loose weight, eat less !
We could all learn something from the women of a couple generations ago, that had button boxes, rolls of twine, made aprons from old sheets or worn out dresses, not $8 a yard fabric. Gardened, canned, mended rips and tears. Quilts made from old clothing, content hearts, jars filled with saved change on the shelf in the kitchen. Rugs made from old winter coats. Recipes that are simple and tasty. Not exotic and expensive recipes requiring fancy ingredients. Simple toys for children, often made from their imagination.
The folks of the olden days were serious recyclers. Living green without even knowing what that phrase meant and also having very little debt in their lifetime.
Maybe we could all stand to go back in time a bit with our thinking.
