Wednesday Thoughts

We are having wonderfully cool weather the past couple of days with rain that is badly needed.
Last night hopping into bed reminded me of camping in October, the way the bed felt ever so slightly damp and the temperature just right for pulling the covers up. With the windows open, the damp cool air has filled the house. Maybe it reminded me of a midnight stroll along York Beach, that same damp coolness that feels so welcome after a long hot summer. I suspect we are not done with heat, but this has been a wonderful reprieve.

Mei-Ling sees the nephrologist this morning. It seems at times her life is one of Doctor visits and tests. Her sweet disposition has not been marred by such though. Most days its hard to even relate that her health is so fragile. She is a gift. All children are, but when a life has been spared so many times, you just understand how precious that gift is.
I heard the other day that "behind ambition and greed is the emotional state of fear". I have been thinking about that and I suspect it is that blind sort of ambition that is referred to...the kind that ignores family time, personal relationships and probably a full spiritual life. The more I have thought about people I know well, that focus on how much they make, what sort of impression they make and what they can buy next, fear is the foundation they try very hard to conceal. Faith and trust are not powerful influences to ambition and greed. I wonder if people are more fearful in this modern world, greed is certainly more common then 200 years ago for the average person. Contentment seems to be fading.

Your picture is really nice, very serene and soothing.
I wish Mei-Ling good luck with all the medical stuff, but she's been doing so great in spite of all the hardships... lots of strength and courage to you all.
As for contentment fading... we were discussing that with someone coming from the Hungarian minority of Romania (who now lives in Alsace and can compare the two ways of life) ; he told me exactly the same things ! With material comfort and facility, the human, homey and warm side of relationships in a family or in a neighborhood disappear. And fear creeps in most of the time (in many forms, it's too long and detailed for me to go into it now !) Tonight we were watching Kirikou and the Witch (do you happen to know it ? it's an animated movie taking place in Africa) and Kirikou's mother summed it all up : (talking about the witch ransoming their village and depriving them of water, and abducting all the warriors who had come to fight her) "You can live without gold ; you can't live without water, and you can't live without the ones you love". If you want I can tell you more about it.
