Today was soap making day on our little homestead. I made a soap using no animal fats. Just olive oil, palm oil and coconut oil. Scented it with anise oil. In the pictures you can see the oils in my big kettle. They are heated to just the right temperature and then I add my lye water cooled down to about 100 degrees. The Lye water is added to the fats and stirred for about a half hour.

Patty: I used to make soap too! Probably not something I'll make any time soon but there's nothing like homemade soap! My son loves to fish and the anise soap was great for removing the fish odor.

We had a soapmaking evening at church last year - I made the recipe like yours using oils - it was a dismal failure as it never set, but it sure smelled good! My mother-in-law has made soap a lot and she used the animal fats method, and hers turned out beautifully. I enjoyed the evening as we all had a lot of fun but am not sure I would do it again, although I would love to make a batch that worked, so I could say "I did it!" :-)
