Locally Grown

Tonight on the weather channel there was a show on the book by Barbara Kingsolver,
"Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" a wonderful telling of living for one year eating only locally grown food. I was captivated by the information provided on this show and can't wait to get a copy of this book. It sure made going out to the garden tonight to pick collard greens more purposeful to me. YouTube has a great video interview with Kingsolver. Its about 17 minutes long but well worth the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBOxJStq9k8

I just finished the book a few weeks ago. It is great. Her website has lots of good info and some great recipes as well.
You will love the book.

I forgot to mention that the can be obtained in a audio version. It is available for download from our library. I don't know if you listen to many books but I have found it a great help when I have lots of busy work that doesn't take any thought. It gets me through many mundane tasks.

It's a great book. I read it a couple years ago and haven't looked back since! The slow food movement is a terrific one. Tons of blogs are following the premise such as onelocalsummer and others. Have fun!

An excellent book --- I have been enjoying it --- but --- (my disclaimer) --- it's presented as some revolutionary new idea --- I guess that some people don't realize that there are people like us who live sustainably in the manner presented already and it's a way of life for us, not some new thing. Great principles and interesting reading, though.

I had collards for dinner last night. I'm eating the leftovers for lunch tomorrow. I love collards. I'm not as found of turnip greens but I can eat my weight in collard greens.

The Kingsolver book is on my list to read after I finish school in April.

It is a very good book, and certainly inspired our family to do more local eating! It's hard to find locally grown around here and we have not done well with gardening, but we are working on it.

I saw the Barbara Kingsolver piece on the weather channel tonight, too. I read her book when it first came out - in fact, I met her and her husband in person (in Chicago, at a book signing/sustainable living lecture) when the book first came out and they were promoting it. She has always been one of my favorite authors and was absolutely delightful and down-to-earth in person. Anyway, I'm sure you will love Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. There's a web site with all the recipes from the book, too.

I agree with everyone else about Barbara's book. I read it last year cover to cover in just a few days. It is an easy read with lots of insight into her family and the humor found in challenging themselves. I plan to get a copy for my bookshelves to re-read from time to time as inspiration for the journey that my hubbie and I are on. Love your posts and pictures of your critters and family.
