Spinning Shetland

Here is a video of me spinning some shetland wool. Spinning is one of the most soothing things to do.

I have seen a lot of blogs about ladies who spin. I wasn't fortunate enough to have "spinners" in my family, so I feel kind of silly asking this but... Where on earth do you start?

Where do you get the wool in the first place?

What happens to the fiber when it is spinning?

Apparently that art form is dead around here because I would love to learn it but haven't found a single place to do so.

I learned how to spin from the local spinners and weavers guild. Went to a couple meetings, the ladies were so willing to teach me and when I knew it was something I would want to do long term, I purchased a wheel and my girls also learned and we bought them wheels also. You can get the "roving" from fiber shops on line or perhaps near you, or as many do, have sheep and grow your own ! The wool is twisted on by the spinning action, which turns it into yarn. You decide the thickness by allowing the amount of wool you want to pass through your fingers. Perhaps do a search for spinning and weaving guilds in your area and go from there. If you were close, I would just say come on over and I will teach you
